The consumer fury applied to the building industry caused and causes devastating amount of waste, in all senses.
The intrinsic unsustainability of such an approach finally emerged in the public awareness to the extent that European standards [2008/98/Ce, Waste Framework Directive] aim at reaching by 2020 an ambitious goal: 70% preparing for re-use, recycling and other recovery of construction and demolition waste.
The [apparent] variety of products and components available on the market of construction is not consistent with the economy of scarcity, a condition that in the past forcedly imposed to go for building materials apt to be used and reused.
Beside the ambiguity of the definition of waste, the principle to extend as much as possible the life of building components is not a novelty, and sometimes can reach remarkable results, as demonstrated by inspiring examples: reuse, recycle and recovery, however, are not decisive in themselves.
Since not always good assumptions generate appropriate outcomes, it will be interesting to observe practical implications of the new rules, and verify in which way design will make use of re-use.
